Do y’all know what scaffolding is?
I’m a teacher. Scaffolding is something we have to learn about in depth in order to be effective in the field. At it’s most basic, it’s the process of building blocks for children to repeat actions, either by watching the teachers or by following along, until they can work independently. We create stepping stones, essentially, and give them the space and the attention they need to succeed on their own.
Scaffolding came into play as an effective model of parenting. It’s how some of the best parents teach their children. And this can be common -more than classroom activities. Showing them how to press numbers on a telephone? That’s scaffolding. Showing them how to vacuum the rug? Scaffolding! Giving them instructions and demonstrating how to change batteries? Scaffolding again!
Any process of a parent, a good parent, in which they give direction before doing it themselves, helping the kids follow, is scaffolding. And the mark of a terrific mother or father. It points to patience, depth, and empathy.
That’s what Héctor is doing.
it’s incredibly subtle, but it’s there. The way he spins his hand, the way he twists his body to keep watching Miguel- these are all actions of a well-seasoned parent directing a child (their child) through some sort of movement they might have not done on their own. It’s the mark of someone who’s done something like this before -taken the time to teach a child something- and the move of a parent who’s barely even thinking about what they’re doing while they’re doing it.
This is the mark of a natural parent.
This movement is small, but it needs to be appreciated.

I worked in HR, handling applications and interviews, and if someone turned in that string of techno babble nonsense, I would have rejected them out of hand.

A resume doesn’t need to sound fancy or overly technical, it needs to tell us why we should hire you.

“Independent novelist/writer” is more than sufficient here. If you want to express the skills that fan fiction taught you, something like, “creative writing, editing, and publication,” will get you a lot further than… Whatever that just was.

A resume should be tailored to the position, if you can afford the time and energy for that. But if not, then just think about what writing got fandom taught you. How to respond to criticism, how to present a professional pubic face, how to correct punished mistakes, creative thinking, project planning, persuasion via emotional leverage, html formatting, office suite fluency.

There are a lot of actual, marketable skills that go into fan fiction.

How to put “I was in a zine” on your resume

Writer:

Published short fiction stories for anthology collection

Able to write short fiction within a designated word count for layout purposes (900-1500 words, 1500-2000, 3000-5000)
Wrote short articles for independent publication

Assisted with editing short stories for publication

Able to reduce or expand written content based on layout needs

Able to check for basic spelling, grammar and syntax

Familiar with Microsoft Office and Google docs

Able to convert text styles such as bold and italics across platforms, including rich text and HTML

If you're still taking tutorial suggestions -- could you do one on how to use different layer modes, or which ones are good for different kinds of effects?

Ok, so, to be honest I’m still learning a lot of this myself but I’ll try my best to give you most of what I’ve figured out!

Here’s my list of important layers that I use the most and why:

Normal Modes: Basically just use normal here. Dissolve is ok if you want to play around a bit but otherwise I don’t use it.

Darken Modes:

Darken: use for shading when you want to desaturate. It’s basically the same as multiply but it keeps your grey colors better.

Multiply: Helpful for shading, automatically makes the layer you’re using into a darkening layer. Con- it excludes your light colours, so it can change the values in your piece.

Color burn: I use this sparingly for skin etc. It adds a red “burn” tinge to some areas with can be helpful but is waay too easy to overdo.

Lighten Modes:

Color Dodge: a good layer for easily adding sunlight effects etc, but be careful as it’s easy to overdo and wash out or overpower your light areas

Linear Dodge (add): I use this for textures I want to import because it’s not as destructive as other layers. Mainly use this if you want to add in some sparks, stars, or rainbow effects from photos. Anything you like with a black bg will be ok.

Composite Modes: I don’t use any of these to be honest. Play around with them at the late stages of your painting if you want to test them out, but otherwise I usually find they’re too inneffective or destructive to my pieces

Color Modes:

Color: I use this if I want to add undertones to skin last minute or saturate an area more without adding an adjustment layer. It’s really good for adding color to your paintings without changing your black and white values too much etc. It sometimes works better when you paint directly on the layer you want to change with “color” as a brush mode instead of a new layer, so try it that way if it’s not working the way you’d like at first.

oh also here’s a drawing study I did to give you an idea of it in practice:

I started with a black and white sketch which I changed to “multiply”,
added a “normal” layer underneath with a neutral skin tone
used a “color” layer to tweak the saturation of the skin,
and finished it off with “color dodge” for the highlights!
